Eric Jegel Helps Mehlville Senior High win Engineering Award

Mehlville High Project Leads the Way

 To First Place

Six Mehlville High School students built their way to a first place overall finish in the Project Lead The

Way® (PLTW) St. Louis Regional Engineering Academies competition. Without any outside help, the team had two hours to design, document, build, demonstrate, and present a solution to a given problem. This year’s problem was to create a method of delivering food, water, and heat to a captured “alien” avoiding contact between the alien and humans to avoid harm to both. The team was presented with a parts kit that included a variety of items such as tape, foam board and straws that would help them build the solution. The solution the team created was a retrievable pushed cart with a trap door delivery mechanism.

Judges from Boeing, AmerenUE, STLCC, and INNOVENTOR chose the winners at the competition. With 14 schools participating Mehlville received first place overall, first place in documentation, second in design and fourth place in teamwork.

Jimmy Jackson, Eric Jegel (from St. Johns), Melissa Peterein, Alex Wohlschlaeger, Andy Yost and Eugene Leshchenko participated on the winning team, which was advised by Robert Schimmel and RichardRosenkoetter.

The team was awarded scholarships to St. Louis Community College, computer thumb drives, $400 for Mehlville’s program, and an invitation to present their solution to the staff at INNOVENTOR. Project Lead The Way® (PLTW) is a not-for-profit organization that promotes preengineering courses for middle and high school students. PLTW forms partnerships with public schools, higher education institutions and the private sector to increase the quantity and quality of engineers and engineering technologists graduating from our educational system.
